A final taste of Chef Sean Brock
My favorite chef in Nashville (and fast becoming my favorite chef, without any qualifiers [except, of course, my sister, but that's something else entirely]) is, sadly, leaving Nashville to take over the kitchen at McCrady's in Charleston, South Carolina (their address is 2 Unity Alley, in case you want that information for later). Last night, I made time to say goodbye to him. I also had the distinct pleasure of bringing my good friend Steph with me, since she is as much of an amateur foodie (less time under her belt than I have, maybe, but she has great potential) as I am, and I knew she would appreciate the experience. I got in touch with Chef Brock in advance, and asked him if he would be willing to do a tasting menu, and he very kindly agreed (St. Patrick's day was lucky indeed, I only gave him three days notice!). I gave him free reign on the menu (we had late-ish reservations, so there was a little concern about not wanting to keep our server there for 87 million hours), and this is what he put together for us. First, I want to apologize for the quality of the photographs. I'm no photographer, not to mention the fact that I was so excited to try these beautiful dishes that I was too impatient to get the "perfect" shot. Not to mention the bit where my hands shake. So, trust me that the photos don't do justice to the dishes, but hopefully the visual aid will make the descriptions easier to understand. Second, I want to apologize for the quality of the writing. I spend a lot of time thinking about food, and a lot of time talking about food (anyone who knows me can attest to that one), but very little time writing about food, and so I will probably descend into ridiculousness (ZOMG!!1ONE) when it comes to describing things for which I lack the appropriate vocabulary. You are eligible to donate 56 days after your previous donation
I'm going to donate blood next week on Thursday (that is, Thursday, February 9th, 2006). Who's going with me? Seriously, I know that most (all?) of you don't live in my area, but the Red Cross is everywhere, and they have a convenient search utility for finding places to donate blood in your area that can be found at www.givelife.org. Plus, I've given you more than a week's notice, so you'll have plenty of time to take a multivitamin every day to make sure your iron levels are up. And why not make a grassroots movement out of it. If you can go, that's excellent! But, even if you can't, I'd appreciate it if you tried to recruit a couple of friends to go. You can even post something in your journal (or anywhere else, really) saying, "hey, my friend Julia is going to go donate blood on Thursday, February 9th. I think that's a pretty good idea, so I thought I'd pass it along. Are any of you interested in donating blood next week?" I look forward to donating blood with you guys! | | Saturday, June 25th, 2005 | | 9:06 am |
